Dancing to Epic Music?
If you caught So You Think You Can Dance last Thursday night on Fox, you may have heard some familiar music. The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers (or LXD) used a new, more epic version of Kerry Muzzey’s “Bernini’s Angels” from Trailer Music 2, and danced to it.
This reworked version of “Bernini’s Angels” is available on iTunes and Amazon in 3 versions: the mix as heard on TV, the complete LXD mix, and the original orchestral version. We are used to hearing epic music like this in movie trailers, so it’s neat to see how Jon M. Chu, the director of the LXD, uses it in this dance routine. Check it out below:
The LXD stars in their own web series, which is the main focus of this dance troupe. It’s now entering its third season, and you can check out the trailer for it below. It features “Palladio: Rebuilt”: another epic piece by Kerry Muzzey. “Palladio: Rebuilt” is also available to buy on iTunes and Amazon.
The unique and visually stunning series uses dance to tell its story, which revolves around two rival dance groups. Seasons 1 and 2 can be watched for free on Hulu. If the word ‘epic’ comes to mind, that’s quite intentional. I came across an interview in the New York Post, where Jon M. Chu talks about how the LXD got invited on So You Think You Can Dance (they’ve been featured on the show before):
“Jon M. Chu: We actually got asked to do “SYTYCD” off the LXD trailer teasing the shorts. One of the producers was searching for “epic music” on YouTube and every video we do is tagged epic, so our trailer showed up and they invited us on. LXD was always meant to be online in a serialized manner, with each chapter changing genres and also the dance styles, that would culminate into a bigger story.
NYPost: Amazing that this is all due to the word “epic.”
Jon: Yep, that’s the word [laughs].” (source)
While The LXD pulls it off, I wouldn’t recommend adding “Bernini’s Angels” to the playlist at your next dance party. For now though, we can watch The LXD to get an idea of what that might be like.
Great post, thanks for sharing. 🙂
