Trailer Music Live!

The concert, put on by Imperativa Records and Immediate Music, that we've all been waiting for premiered last night: "Trailer Music Live" June 27th, 8pm at The Broad Stage, in Santa Monica California.

We asked you to spread the word, and I'm happy to report, that it was a full house; completely sold out. I actually had to tell someone that they couldn't go to the concert early in the day.

After the many hours of rehearsals, and all the preparation, Trailer Music Live finally happened, and it was an event to behold. Epic is the best word to describe it, as there were over 100 performers on stage, all playing their hearts out.

The concert began with the traditional green trailer preview banner projected behind the performers on a giant screen. There was a prologue of sorts, with the female vocalist Jane, singing (I wish I could remember her last name; thanks Shadylanestudio for the first). After this, the orchestra began playing, and they played "Empyrean Mercenaries" with the Angeles Chorale filling out the epic sound.

The first half of the concert was Trailer Music by Immediate. A trailer voiceover announcer was there, and he introduced the evening, in an amusing fashion, with Yoav Goren providing a dark ambience on his keyboard. Sadly I forget the voiceover artist's name, but he voiced "The Hangover" trailer and many others (he also voiced the TML TV Spot). He alluded to a feeling that I shared when he referred to the impossibility of there being a concert devoted entirely to trailers. It was happening though, and the night continued with more songs: Archangel, Dark Side of Power, An Epic Age, Preliator, La Coronacion, Birth of a Nation, Prometheus Rising, Journey to the Front, Onward to Glory, Arcana, and Age of Discovery.

The music was incredible, and while I've heard most of the songs before, it was something else to hear them live. It was also neat to hear the pieces played straight through without sound fx or edits; pieces that usually one would only hear in an advertisement. Yoav spoke often, speaking between songs, and giving a background on some of the trailer music pieces, as well as introducing his fellow musicians: Jefferey Fayman (composer, co-founder of Immediate) was on drums and percussion, the California students that made up the Immediate orchestra, and the Angeles Chorale.

During this first half, the trailer announcer came out to pose a challenge to the crowd. The trailer footage from "Defiance" was shown without music, and then three excerpts of music were played afterwards. He left it up to the audience to be the music supervisor and choose which song to put with the trailer based on applause; Journey to the Front, Ygor's Theme, or Prometheus Rising.

The audience gave a lot of applause to the first and last, and more applause than there should have been for the middle, upbeat, comedic theme of Ygor (which got Jeffery's vote). In the end, they played both Prometheus and Journey to the Front to the trailer. Jane added her vocal talents to some of the songs, including Preliator, and Journey to the Front.

The show continued with the Emmy award winning "Onward to Glory" from the Torino Olympics, and the Trailer Music set ended with "Age of Discovery" which sounded wonderful, and worked exceptionally well in the live setting. It got a very big applause.

Throughout the first half, pieces of trailers were played along with the music. It was a very cool meld to have the trailers there with the music, and definitley added to the experience.

At this point, Yoav introduced Globus which started with "Take Me Away". Dann P did vocals and guitar of course. Jane sang the lead or accompaniment for some of the songs; she is a new member of Globus, as she is not the vocalist who performed at Wembley. Tate Simms played bass guitar, and donned a black trenchcoat and cowboy hat if I remember correctly. He had a great energy on stage, and really got into it. Everyone did; Yoav looked like he was having a blast, playing his keyboard, the Steinway piano, and doing vocals every once and a while.

Globus played Europa (my personal favorite), Mighty Rivers Run, Orchard of Mines, Crusaders of the Light, Prelude, Struck Dumb, Diem Ex Dei, and finished with Sarabande.

The orchestral, choral, rock sound was incredible. It was loud, melodic, and a fantastic experience to see and hear live.

"Struck Dumb" was a new song that will be on Globus's next album. I loved it, and the piano melody that Yoav played for it was beautiful. I look forward to being able to hear it again.

There were cameramen filming the concert, and they'd project the footage from their cameras up on the screen as well. I mention it because there should be a DVD of the concert someday, and that way everyone can share in this epic night of trailer music. This was a one of a kind event; the first of its kind. Yoav hopes to have more, and I hope that as well. This event in Santa Monica was great exposure, and I hope everyone who saw and heard it, was as impressed as I was.

(Photos weren't allowed during the actual concert; these are from the dress rehearsal earlier in the day.)
