Diego Stocco: Post Civilization

Diego Stocco is a musician full of surprises, and you may have already heard of him – perhaps not as a composer of epic trailer music, but surely as a talented and creative sound designer who’s constantly looking for new and original sounds. Stocco is always exploring new possibilities – including making music from a tree… or even a dry cleaner!

Stocco is also known for his work with Epic Score: he did the first three Epic Textures volumes. In addition to this, he has been involved in various other projects, as well as in feature films and video games as composer, featured soloist and sound designer.

He recently released a suite of cinematic trailer tracks, entitled Post Civilization. It doesn’t feature any music from the dry cleaner, though; Stocco wanted new sounds for this particular project. Hence his decision to built, and play, an entire custom orchestra. Nothing is impossible, isn’t it?

In Post Civilization, you can therefore hear an experiviolin (derived from a violin), an expericello (inspired by a cello), an experibass, an arcophonico (derived from… a tree branch), a luminopiano (combining light bulbs with a piano), a textural flute, a glockenstrange (hard to describe), a sub-bass column (also hard to describe), tonal metals, a double frame drum, and a harpiano. If you are wondering what all these instruments look like, or how they work, you can read more about it on Diego Socco’s blog.

“I love building and playing custom built instruments because they generate unique sounds” Stocco says. “As you can imagine, in film scoring there’s always room for new timbres.” And this is true. You can judge it by yourself – Post Civilization sounds a bit different from trailer music pieces featuring classical instruments, but the music can be equally powerful and emotional – or perhaps even more. In “Alpha”, for instance, the experibass delivers a beautiful yet haunting sound, which contributes in a major way to the dramatic and emotional aspect of the track.

Stocco plans to compose more cinematic trailer music in the future. For more updates, you can follow him on FacebookTwitterYoutubeVimeo, and SoundCloud, or visit his website.
