Michael Patti Takes us from Mockup to Orchestra
Michael Patti recently did an awesome short little video about the process of how a trailer piece gets made.
Of course, you can apply this to any cue that gets recorded, but in this particular video, Michael takes the track “Hope Returns”, from audiomachine’s Labyrinth, and shows the process of bringing it from the page, to the mockup, to the recording hall. The recording hall should look familiar to anyone who has seen the Full Tilt video interview.
His blog, by the way, is called “Where’s the Orchestra“. Michael has posted a bunch of audiomachine cues he composed, comparing his mockup, to the real thing. It’s very interesting to hear the difference. Where does the orchestra bring their own dynamics and expression, and what parts stand out more live versus sampled? The real thing is almost always better I think, but wow those mockups are impressive!
Another very cool thing is that he has posted the sheet music for each of them in .pdf. While that’s pretty meaningless to anyone who doesn’t read notation, for an aspiring composer like me, it’s a gold mine of material to look over and study. Thank you Michael Patti!
